The Outfits
Viman Nagar, Pune
The hands folded at the waist, the gaze level, the stance unhurried — Pragya Shrivastava's silver-grey tissue silk straight kurta asks nothing of the wearer except composure, and it receives it. At the chest, a pair of facing birds rendered in gold zardozi embroidery hold a floral spray between them — a motif with Mughal roots, worn here without ceremony and all the more powerful for it. The silhouette is straight and full-length, the fabric catching light with the quiet shimmer characteristic of tissue silk. A black organza dupatta with a wide silver-grey border and gold gota fringe drapes the arms. Black patent ballet flats with a gold buckle. Gold choker, glass bangles, rings on both hands. Restraint as a form of authority.
There is a particular kind of confidence that moves through a busy street as though it owns the light — and the pastel organza dupatta streaming off Pragya Shrivastava's shoulder in diagonal stripes of blue, lilac, and blush is precisely that kind of confidence made textile. The kurta beneath is white, its hem a wide panel of gold-pink zari and resham embroidery in dense paisley and floral motifs, the sleeves finished with white lace trim and mirror-work detailing at the cuffs. White straight-cut palazzos. The dupatta itself has a scalloped lace border and drifts with the purposeful ease of something that has been thrown, not placed. Embellished block-heel sandals in ivory. A gold ring, gold bangles. The whole ensemble is mid-morning and certain of itself.
